Sunday Sermons from Father Oleg

1 February 2026

In today’s parable we see two different men: one of them did not commit adultery, fasted, gave alms and appeared to be the model of righteousness; the other one was a tax collector who was crooked and collaborated with his nation’s enemies. Both of them had tremendous virtues – one his diligence to the Law of God; another – his humility as shown in his prayer “God, be merciful to me a sinner.” Hearing this story, we tend to think about ourselves, who we are: a tax collector or a Pharisee? The tragedy of our Christian life is that we are all worse than the Pharisee and worse than the Publican. We do not fulfill the commandments, but there is Pharisean pride in each of us.The tax collector shamelessly and dishonestly stole people, but he came to his senses and condemned his whole life. We, as a tax collector, use other people, but at the same time we do not go to repentance as he did. St. Paul says about us: people who have the appearance of godliness, but have denied its power. That’s why we are invited today to follow the Publican’s footsteps. The Pharisee in the gospel was so spiritually blind that he even prayed to himself. The tax collector was the complete opposite, focused only on his own need for God’s mercy as the chief of sinners. We should learn to see ourselves as today’s publican with nothing to present to the Lord and a humble desire to turn toward Him. May we all follow his blessed example during our Lenten journey this year.
