Holy Unction at St. Xenia Parish – April 11, 2025 (Friday) at 6:30 PM

During Great Lent, Orthodox parishes make special efforts to conduct the Mystery of Holy Unction, also known as the Anointing of the Sick. This sacrament provides both physical and spiritual healing through holy oil that has been blessed by the Holy Spirit. At the end of the service, each person’s body is anointed with this oil, and the grace of God is invoked to heal both their soul and body. Please make every effort to attend this important service as part of your Lenten and Holy Week preparations.

When someone is ill and in pain, it’s common to feel alone and isolated. The sacrament of Holy Unction reminds us that, during times of physical, emotional, or spiritual suffering, Christ is present with us through His Church. He offers strength to help us face life’s challenges, even in the face of death.

Similar to Chrismation, oil is used in this sacrament as a symbol of God’s presence, strength, and forgiveness. After reading seven Epistle lessons, seven Gospel lessons, and offering seven prayers dedicated to healing, Father Oleg will anoint all the faithful present with Holy Oil. In Orthodoxy, this sacrament is not reserved solely for those who are near death; it is offered to anyone who is sick in body, mind, or spirit.
